YEAR 3 LEARN ABOUT THE GREEKS Year 3 have been learning about the Greeks. Using the computer we designed Gr eek pots and have made a pot of our own using a plastic washing liquid bottle. We covered the bottle with papier mache and orange paper. We then painted Greek designs onto white paper and this was photocopied onto orange paper and finally pasted onto the jug.
On Wednesday 5th November the class wore Greek costume for the afternoon.
Girls of Y3 report:-
"On our Greek day at lunchtime we all changed into our Greek outfits that we had made or bought.
We went into the hall and Mrs Hall taught us some Greek dancing. It was great fun and we went round in a circle moving backwards and forwards to the music and it went faster and faster.
After the dancing we went back to our classroom for our Greek feast. Some of us sat on the carpet to list what we were going to try! There were lots of different foods - houmous, pitta bread, sardines, figs, yoghort, honey, feta cheese and lots more. We chose what we wanted and took it back to our table to eat. It was delicious.
After our Greek lunch we wrote the Greek alphabet and found out about Greek gods and goddesses and we coloured pictures of them. Later we watched a film about the labours of Heracles. There was just time to go back to the hall for some more Greek dancing. We all loved the dancing very much.
It was time to change back into our uniforms ready to go home. Greek day had been a lot of fun and a good way to learn about the Greeks."

A DAY IN INDIA! JUNE 2008 Year 3 are learning about India this term and continuing on their Indian theme they enjoyed an Indian day in school. Year 3 girls heard about what it is like to live in the Indian village of Chembakolli. They learnt about the climate, agrigculture and the general lifestyle. They tried their hand at block printing and created Rangoli patterns for hands and feet. Rangoli patterns are created and used in India. They are placed on the floor near the entrance to a house to welcome guests and ward off evil spirits! The Hindi name Rangoli is made up of two words - rang and avalli which means a row of colours. The designs are usually symmetrical and geometric patterns of shapes, flowers, birds, fish etc and are brightly coloured.

Year 3 have been studying the Romans. They arrived at The Granville bright and early, dressed in Roman costume. Below is a report by Ellie and Zara about their day out.
Our trip to the Dover Museum was an hour and a half coach drive. When we arrived at the museum we were bubbling with excitement.
First of all we went to look around the museum part. This was all very interesting. We saw the tools that they would have used and they even had a real skeleton!
Then we went into a room and a lady talked to us about how the Roman's dressed and ate.
We had an hour lesson of drama with a man called Ian. He taught us how to say 'salve' which is hello in Latin. Then he put us into groups and we all acted Roman scenes.
There was a talk about weapons and armour and the highlight of the talk was about the citizens of Rome and how people in other countries became Roman citizens.
The best part of the day had to be when we could have our hair done as Roman ladies and we had make up on too. Some of us had wounds put on us and they looked very real.
There was a competition for the best costumes and here is a photograph of the winners.

VISIT TO RAJ BARI INDIAN RESTAURANT - JUNE 2008
In their Geography lessons Year 3 have been learning about India. They visited the local Indian restaurant and the following are their reports:-
We visited the Indian restaurant. First we had some poppadums and they were delicious. Then we had some sauces. My favourite was the minty one. After that we were served with chicken korma which was my favourite - with rice too - it was the most tastiest thing on planet earth! We also had chicken without nuts or garlic - but I didn't try that. We had coke to drink and some sweets and chocolate from the waiters.

On Tuesday 17th June, Class 3 went to the Raj Bari, Indian Restaurant. First of all we were served bread, like pancakes, called poppadums. They were like crisps without the salt. Our main dish was a big bowl of brightly coloured rice and chicken korma. My favourite food was the Naan bread. There were lots of sauces to either dip food in or just 'dollop' on top!

I liked the Indian food - it was delicious. The vegetarian food was very enjoyable. I think I liked the potatoes best of all. We also learnt that the Indians are proud of their lovely food. I think the Raj Bari played beautiful music.

Going to the Indian restaurant was very interesting to see what the Indians ate and how different it was to what we eat. The most different thing was that it was spicy. I thought it was 'yummy'.
