Year 5
YEAR 5 MEXICAN PROJECT Autumn 2008
As a grand finale to their Mexican project classes 5C and 5Q enjoyed a Mexican party.

Reports by Victoria and Amelia:-

Year 5 had a Mexican party to help them understand about how Mexican's prepare their food and what sort of things they like to eat.  The food included lots of tortillas, chocolate fountains and strawberries and bananas.  The food was attractively displayed on our lunch tables in the dining hall.  We all enjoyed the tortillas and everyone loved  the chocolate.  We ate while we listened to Mexican music.

On Wednesday 26th November both year 5 classes gathered together in the hall to have a Mexican party.  We all brought in Mexican food to eat such as doritos, tortillas and sauces to go with the tortillas like salsa and guacamole.  Also to accompany our food we had Mexican music and some people got up and started dancing!  The form captains from both classes were sent to get Mrs Scott, our Headmistress and Mrs Scott joined in the fun as well.  There was LOADS of Galaxy chocolate bars and some people brought in chocolate fountains.  When the fountains were ready the party REALLY started!  Everyone enjoyed the chocolate soooo much and by the look of their faces Izzy, Charlotte and Imogen especially enjoyed it!!

YEAR 5 VISIT TO HASTINGS - June 2008

Year 5 girls report on their day in Hastings.

On Friday 6th June classes 5Q and 5C went to Hastings.  We had been excited about it for weeks and we were so glad we were going.  We had to be at school at 8.15am. The coach left at 8.20am.

After an hour's journey we finally arrived in Hastings. First we went to the Fishermen's Huts. They were bigger than we expected because they had to fit big nets in them. They were tall enough to hang the nets and mend them.

We went down to the beach to do our pebble survey where we measured different size pebbles.  We measured the distance to the beach and it was 75 metres.  As we got nearer to the sea the pebbles were smaller. This was due to erosion. There was a lot of pollution that could destroy our planet. Our teachers said we could have a paddle and we ran to get our towels. We took our trainers off and in we went, but only up to our ankles. The teachers watched us like hawks!

We made our way to the funicular and we split into two groups. We arrived at the top and headed for the smugglers caves.

In the smugglers caves, first we went into a small tunnel and came out into a room where there were pictures, statues and different activities to do with smugglers who smuggled goods like tobacco, beer and drugs.

We went to the shop and bought souvenirs.  We had our lunch and the seagulls tried to eat our lunch - I think they were hungrier than me! After lunch we drew a field sketch of the view.

We went back down the funicular and we had an ice cream.  Once we had our ice creams we headed for the coach not knowing we were going to bump into Miss Froggatt (the niece of the founder of our school). We had our photo taken with her.  Miss Froggatt waved goodbye to us as we set off back to school.

We arrived back at school feeling tired and exhausted, but having enjoyed our day very much.

On a cloudy, windy morning of the 6th June, Year 5 set off for Hastings.  We leapt into the stuffy coach for our journey.

It was bright and sunny when we arrived in Hastings.  We looked at the tall, black, old net huts.  The huts are unique to Hastings.  Then we walked to the pebbly beach which was where we started the pebble survey.  We got into our working groups and we each picked up a pebble and measured it and wrote the measurements on the survey sheet. We measured pebbles every eleven metres (on the way I found flint and geodes).  When we finished our measuring we had a dip in the sea (only up to our ankles).  It was soooo cold and sometimes the water splashed us.

Next we rode on the funicular to get to the St Clement's Caves where we learned all about smugglers and how they smuggled brandy, tea, lace and cheese.  It was dark in the caves and we could barely see anything. It was quite spooky with the waxworks and the fake skeletons. We went into the shop and bought our souvenirs.

We ventured out to have lunch on the headland.  From where we were sitting we could see fishing boats and the sea wall. When we had finished our delicious lunch we drew a field sketch of the view.

After a fun trip back down the funicular, we had refreshing ice cream from Dom's Ice Cream Parlour. It was so yummy!  It was also so exciting to see Miss Froggatt (once headmistress of The Granville) and we were delighted to have our photo taken with her.

Sadly, it was time to leave. We clambered on the coach for our journey back to The Granville.  No-one could ever have a better field trip than Class 5!
