Granville U11 Freestyle Relay team had a brilliant evening on Saturday 26th April, at the English Schools Swimming Association South East Regional Swimming Finals. To qualify, they had to be in the top two teams from Kent in the County round held earlier in the year.
The regional finals were held at The Spectrum Leisure Centre in Guildford, and only the top 16 teams from Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Kent were invited. Granville easily won their heat with a time of 1m 03.03 secs, which was more than a second quicker than Guildford High who came second. The eight schools with the fastest times then swam in the final. The Granville girls took an early lead, but were pushed hard at the end by Guildford High. It was a nail-biting wait to see if we had won, but cheers went round from the Granville team and supporters when it was announced that we had won!
The team will represent the South-East division in the National Finals in Sheffield in June. The girls all train very hard with their clubs, putting in up to 6 hours a week training.
Zoe and Sasha have also qualified for the IAPS National finals for Prep Schools, and compete in Crawley later this month. Zoe is hot favourite for the U11 50m freestyle race, leading the field of 16 swimmers from 149 preliminary swimmers with a time of 31.22s. Sasha qualified as 9th fastest for the 50m Breaststoke out of 135 swimmers.
The Granville relay team consisted of two Year 6 girls, and two Year 5 girls, who did incredibly well for their age!
