Music plays a very important and much-loved role in everyday life at The Granville, from daily singing in assemblies to elaborate festivals and large-scale performances. Specialist class music teaching begins at the age of 3 years and the children are encouraged to sing and respond physically to music from very early on. As they progress through the school, the focus is on a practical and “hands on” teaching approach which gives every child the chance to engage in some form of music-making, including improvisation and composition. Success in performance enhances children’s confidence and self-esteem.

There are opportunities abound for girls to take part in extra-curricular music activities with choirs for Years 3 to 6, two orchestras and several chamber groups. A programme of Informal Concerts as well as Festivals, Community Events and our Summer Concert offers the girls a regular platform for performance throughout the school year.

All girls learn to play the recorder and read music notation in Year 2 and Year 3. They also learn to play the Ukulele as a popular part of the Year 6 curriculum. Our highly qualified and experienced visiting instrumental teachers also offer weekly lessons in piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, saxophone, flute, fife, French horn, trumpet, tenor horn, theory and singing, theory and singing.

Children are prepared for Associated Board exams and for Music Scholarships at various Senior Schools. We are proud of our thriving music department, the degree of enthusiasm and the high standards achieved by the girls.
