Chamber Choir Shines at Rochester Cathedral Festival of Singing

12th May 26

On Monday 11th May, our Chamber Choir took part in a spell-binding concert at Rochester Cathedral. Joined by more than 200 children from other prep schools across the local area, this Festival of Singing — hosted by the IAPS (Independent Association of Preparatory Schools) — was one of two concerts held across the county, bringing together nearly 400 young performers to tackle an ambitious and challenging repertoire.

The concert opened with three pieces by Jonathan Dove. So delighted was the composer to hear that his works formed part of our programme, he even requested a recording of the rehearsal. This was followed by Handel’s Zadok the Priest. Accompanied by a chamber orchestra — made up of Heads of Music and visiting peripatetic teachers — alongside the cathedral organ, the four-part performance of this ambitious masterpiece was delivered with tremendous energy and spirit.

As our school’s solo contribution, the choir performed The Manx Lullaby accompanied by solo violin. The girls embraced the grandeur of their surroundings and performed with exceptional poise before a sold-out audience. They rose magnificently to the occasion, filling the cathedral space with confidence and maturity.

Other highlights from the massed choir performances included Karl Jenkins’ Adiemus, Skyfall (made famous by Adele), and a lively Sea Shanty Medley featuring The Wellerman, What Shall We Do? and O Sinner Man.

Appreciation has poured in from many very proud parents, as well as fellow Directors of Music involved in the event. Our girls were repeatedly complimented on their manners and behaviour by members of the public, cathedral staff and teaching colleagues from other schools — they were a true credit to The Granville and to the Music Department.

Well done to all involved. Thank you to our parents for their wonderful support, and most importantly, to the girls for embracing the occasion wholeheartedly and giving it their all.
